Encyclopedia > Panzergrenadier

Panzergrenadier in German means "motorized infantry". Mechanized infantry is also a new concept in World War II, like tank warfare and aircraft. The concept of Panzergrenadier divisions is to provide fast, rapid transport of infantry to its destination supported by various armored vehicles. What makes Panzergrenadier divisions different from regular infantry is their mobility and equiptment. Regular infantry usually march to their destination; Panzergrenadiers are fully mechanized and they are transported by various types of fast half-track carriers. Regular infantry usually has about 6 infantry regiments, 1 anti-tank battery, 1 medical battalion, and 1 artilery battery. A Panzergrenadier division consists of roughly the same amount of infantry and enough armored personnel carriers (in the case of the Germans, halftracks) to transport infantry, 1 tank battalion, mobile anti-aircraft, and self-propelled artillery. Panzergrenadier divisions were both used in the Wehrmacht and Waffen SS. They were among Hitler's best soldiers, having the ability to move fast and strike hard.
