Papaikou is a census-designated place located in Hawaii County, Hawaii. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,414.


Geography

Papaikou is located at 19°47'38" North, 155°5'48" West (19.794022, -155.096531)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.3 km˛ (2.0 mi˛). 3.8 km˛ (1.5 mi˛) of it is land and 1.5 km˛ (0.6 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 27.94% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,414 people, 475 households, and 363 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 371.4/km˛ (964.3/mi˛). There are 502 housing units at an average density of 131.9/km˛ (342.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 15.28% White, 0.50% African American, 0.07% Native American, 45.83% Asian, 9.41% Pacific Islander, 1.41% from other races, and 27.51% from two or more races. 6.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 475 households out of which 29.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.8% are married couples living together, 14.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.4% are non-families. 19.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.98 and the average family size is 3.35.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.3 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $37,031, and the median income for a family is $40,446. Males have a median income of $25,000 versus $24,205 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $13,782. 15.0% of the population and 12.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.0% of those under the age of 18 and 7.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
