From my experience with other paper and pencil games, I'd say the connection is a loose one and if you were looking for the game's true inspiration, 1985's arcade hit Gauntlet would be it.
And the game holds very true to Romero's zombies, in that you can easily walk past them, outrun them, and they can be very easy to kill, falling over like saplings under the blade of an axe.
There is an entire encyclopedia of undead and demonic entities to take on in the game and that, more than anything, I'm sure, is where the influence from the paper and pencil game is most accurately felt.
