Encyclopedia > Papilla

A papilla (plural: papillae) can be:

  • A small projection, such as a nipplelike projection on the skin, at the base of a hair or the root of a feather; the base of a new tooth.
  • An interdental papilla is the part of gingiva located between teeth.
  • Any of the small projections on the top of the tongue, in particular vallate and fungiform papillae, which contain taste buds.
  • A pimple or blister.
  • A papilla can also grow inside the anal canal. Known as an "Anal Papilla", it can grow larger than a walnut and cause discomfort for some during bowel movements. As with most internal growths, it is usually advised to have the Papilla surgically removed to prevent the formation of cancer. Allthough the procedure is somewhat simple, your surgeon will most likely want to put you under general anethsesia and perscribe you strong painkillers for the post-operation pain. Most painkillers, however, can cause constipation and thus make post-surgical bowel movements extremely painful.
