Deviations from book

The script made several deviations from the book:

  • The ages of Papillon and Dega are radically changed from book to film: in the book, Papillon is "25 years-old, looking 20" and Dega is 42. Dega is a bit younger in the film, and Papillon appears much older.
  • It dramatizes the role of men hired to hunt down escaped prisoners.
  • Papillon's imprisonment before sailing to the French Guiana is non-existent in the film, as is his trial.
  • Papillon knew Dega well before boarding the ship to Guiana. They had agreed to protect each other while waiting in prison to be transported to South America.
  • Dega was not included in the first escape attempt.
  • Papillon's ultimate escape is somewhat changed.

South America South America is a continent crossed by the equator, with most of its area in the Southern Hemisphere. ...

Papillon (1973) (566 words)
Crew or equipment visible: In the last scene as Papillon jumps from the cliff after he throws the bag of coconuts, you can see in the upper left quarter of the frame what seems to be a camera helicopter shooting from another angle.
At times the film is extremely harrowing to watch, and at other times the story tends to drag a little.
My first viewing of the film years ago made an indelible impression on me, but I must confess that later viewings convinced me that it is not exactly flawless in that the pacing is sometimes much too slow and the ending is somewhat unsatisfying.
Papillon Movie Review, DVD Release - Filmcritic.com (755 words)
Papillon is a man of action, a safecracker, a physical presence, while Dega is a cunning intellectual, a slight man with coke-bottle glasses.
When Papillon is ordered to serve two years in solitary confinement after an escape attempt, Dega sends coconuts to Papillon’s cell to augment his meager food rations, a grave breach of prison rules.
In what is surely one of the greatest prison escapes ever put on film, Papillon and Dega dodge bullets, traverse jungles, sail across the ocean, and brave thrilling encounters with a leper colony, a bounty hunter, an indigenous tribe and the Honduran army.
