It was a member of the extinct order of Multituberculata, and it lies within the suborder of Cimolodonta, family Neoplagiaulacidae. The genus was named by Jepsen G.L. in 1930 and means ‘beside Ectypodus'. The genus has also been known as Ectypodus (partly); Mimetodon (partly); Neoplagiaulax (partly); "Parectypodus"; Perectypodus; Ptilodus (partly)
. P. jepseni is a junior synonym for Stygimys jepseni.
