Parris Island is a census-designated place located in Beaufort County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 4,841.

Parris Island is located at 32°19'44" North, 80°41'41" West (32.328944, -80.694619)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 50.8 km² (19.6 mi²). 31.5 km² (12.2 mi²) of it is land and 19.3 km² (7.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 37.96% water.


The land was previously owned by Zachariah McGill, A wealthy south Carolinian land owner of mixed white/Indian ancestry through the early to mid 1800s. Many questions and an unresolved legal battle still linger regarding the sale of Parris island to the US military in 1883 under questionable circumstances.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,841 people, 318 households, and 297 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 153.7/km² (398.0/mi²). There are 358 housing units at an average density of 11.4/km² (29.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 69.14% White, 17.35% African American, 0.83% Native American, 1.76% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 7.13% from other races, and 3.68% from two or more races. 13.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 318 households out of which 72.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 87.7% are married couples living together, 4.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 6.3% are non-families. 4.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 0.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.31 and the average family size is 3.40.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 10.6% under the age of 18, 72.4% from 18 to 24, 15.7% from 25 to 44, 1.2% from 45 to 64, and 0.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 20 years. For every 100 females there are 303.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 339.3 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $46,335, and the median income for a family is $45,750. Males have a median income of $17,428 versus $16,359 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $11,216. 6.9% of the population and 7.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.1% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Both Beaufort County and its county seat of Beaufort were named for Henry Somerset, Duke of Beaufort (1684-1714), one of the Lords Proprietors of Carolina.
Federal troops occupied Beaufort in December 1861, and the first school in the South for freed slaves was established during the Civil War at what is now Penn Center on St. Helena Island.
The United States Marine Corps began training recruits at Parris Island in 1915, and later in the twentieth century Hilton Head Island and neighboring sea islands have become popular resort and retirement destinations.
