"Parting Gift" is a song by American singer-songwriter Fiona Apple, the first single from her forthcoming 2005 album Extraordinary Machine (see 2005 in music). On August 15, 2005, Epic Records made available for streaming both "Parting Gift" and "O' Sailor", another track from the album, on Apple's official website. The following day, the song was offered as part of a two-song digital download (with "O' Sailor") at the online iTunes Music Store. It will be released as a CD in the fall of 2005, to coincide with the album's release in early October. "Parting Gift", written by Apple, is the only track on Extraordinary Machine not to have been recorded during the Jon Brion-produced sessions, instead being produced exclusively by Mike Elizondo and Brian Kehew. It is three minutes and 34 seconds long, and was recorded on the first take. Described as "a characteristically bitter breakup song" by MTV News, the lyrics of the song revolves around Apple chastising a former beau (calling him a "silly, stupid pastime"), but lamenting their failed relationship: "It ended bad but I loved what we started".
