Partnership for Peace is a NATO project aimed at creating trust between NATO and other states in Europe and the former Soviet Union. It was created in 1994, soon after the collapse of the former Eastern bloc. Ten states which were members (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia) have sinced joined NATO. Partnership for Peace (PFP), program established in 1994 to strengthen relations between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.
The Partnership for Peace was created within the framework of NACC to allow these countries, some of which have not yet established military and political stability, to develop a closer relationship with NATO.
PFP participants pledge to share defense and security information with NATO, to maintain democratic control of their military, and to be ready to participate in peacekeeping operations.
Partnership for Peace (PfP) is a major initiative introduced by NATO at the January 1994 Brus- sels Summit.
PfP funding guidelines agreed by NATO stipulate that, for an interim period, to alleviate the burden on the Partners from their participation in Partnership activities, assistance could be made available by the Alliance if required.
The Partnership Coordination Cell is responsible, under the authority of the North Atlantic Council, for coordinat ing joint military activities within the Partnership for Peace and for carrying out the military planning necessary to implement the military aspects of the Partnership Programmes, notably, the preparation of PfP exercises.
