Pasay City is one of the cities and municipalities that comprise Metro Manila in the Philippines. It is bordered on the north by the country's capital, Manila, to the northeast by Makati City, to the east by Taguig, and Parañaque City to the south.
Pasay City was one of the original four cities of Metro Manila. Due to its close proximity to Manila, it fast became an urban town during the American Period.
Pasay City was notorious for being a red-light district in Metro Manila. Through the recent efforts of the city government, this reputation has been minimized somewhat and efforts are in place to develop the city as a reputable tourist destination.
History
Pasay's name originated from the SpanishPaso hay meaning there is a pass. This referred to the paths cleared among the grass leading to the southern portions from Manila.
Pasay became a city on June 21, 1947 and was renamed Rizal City, after Jose Rizal, the country's national hero. In 1949, it was renamed back to Pasay.
The upper house of the legislature (Senate of the Philippines) is located in Pasay City, and the lower house (Congress of the Philippines) in Quezon City.
Metro Manila currently has a large number of malls in the Philippines, and the largest of these is the SM Mall of Asia in the Pasay City reclamation area.
The trans-Metro Manila portion of the still-open southern line, known as Southrail, commences at Tutuban station in Tondo, Manila, passes through the cities of Manila, Makati, Taguig, Parañaque and Las Piñas, and ends in Barangay Buli, Muntinlupa City, before entering the province of Laguna.
