In the early history of Bible Students, a number of prominent brethren withdrew their support from the Watchtower Society after Judge Rutherford became the president of the Society, following the death of Pastor Russell. Indeed, the late Charles Taze Russell (1852-1916) was the founder and organizer of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society and served as the editor of Zion's Watch Tower and Herald of Christ's Presence from its inception in July 1879.
The Independent Bible Students, although a fraction in comparison to the Jehovah's Witnesses, were rejoicing in their Christian freedom, and were functioning as they had since the days of Russell.
This was the clue that led this group to advocate an invisible presence of Christ, claiming it began in the fall of 1874.
