Harrington gained considerable recognition for his many appearances as the comedic Italian immigrant "Guido Panzini" on the Jack Parr Show in the mid 1950s and in 1967 he appeared in the Elvis Presley film, Easy Come, Easy Go. However, he is best known to later generations for his role as "Dwayne F. Schneider" on the popular 1975-1984 television drama/comedy, One Day at a Time for which he won an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award. Pat Harrington was born in Kennington and his secondary education was at Pimlico Comprehensive and Archbishop Tenison's Grammar School.
In 1984 Pat Harrington was the subject of protests by students at the Polytechnic of North London, who picketed Philosophy lectures to protest his studentship while a prominent member of the National Front (NF), which he joined in 1979, and deputy editor of their publication NF News.
Harrington's personal archive of papers from his time in the Front, which his Third Way biography describes as a "collection on both the extreme right and left from his own extensive library of political material", was donated to the Modern Records Centre at Warwick University.
