Kelly was an official of the Drivers' Union, a secretary of the Cleaners' Union and president of the Wellington Trades Council during his career. He was also active in the anti-Vietnam-war, anti-apartheid, anti-nuclear, and peace movements.
He was 75 years old when he died. He was survived by his wife, Cath, son, Max, and daughter-in-law, Helen. The Dominion Post contained more detail in its Family Notices on 26 June and is likely to publish a formal obituary shortly.

A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Kelly debuted with the Minnesota Twins in 1967.
Kelly made the American League All-Star team as a member of the Chicago White Sox in 1973, during a season in which he hit.280 in a career-high 144 games.
Kelly died from a heart attack in Baltimore, Maryland, at age of 61.
