New evidence that supports Pat Sullivan's claim that he created Felix
Patrick Sullivan (1887 – 15 February1933) was an Australian émigré filmproducer, best known for producing the first Felix the Cat silent cartoons.
Felix was the most popular cartoon character in theatres until 1930, when Sullivan's distributors cancelled his contract because of his refusal to move towards sound films.
Sullivan relented in 1933, and announced that Felix would return in sound, but died that year before production began.
Produced by: PatSullivan; Directed/Written by: Otto Messmer
Though PatSullivan took credit for Felix for years, it is generally accepted that the cat was created by Otto Messmer, who worked for Sullivan, as a variation on a Charlie Chaplin cartoon he'd already done.
Sullivan was slow to pick up the new technology, and when he did, his studio's skills were lacking, and a mouse took over as the second true animated star.
