THE HIGH COURT OF JUDICATURE AT PATNA, the foundation stone for which was laid in the year 1913 by Sir Charles Hardinge, the Viceroy of India; was ushered into existence in the year 1916, exercising jurisdiction over Bihar and Orissa, until the latter got its own in the year 1948.


The Patna High Court had a Bench at Ranchi (1972:Circuit Bench; 1976:Permanent Bench), which became the Jharkhand High Court on 15th November 2000, under the Bihar Reorganisation Act of 2000.


In the long years since its inception, it has carved a niche for itself in delivering justice, fearlessly and impartially. It has come a long way establishing itself as the guiding star for other branches of government.


Hon'ble Sir Justice Edward Maynerd Des Champs Chamier was the first Chief Justice of Patna High Court.


This High Court has given two Chief Justices of India, viz. Hon'ble Mr. Justice Bhuvaneshwar Prasad Sinha, the 6th C.J.I. and Hon'ble Mr. Justice Lalit Mohan Sharma, the 24th C.J.I.


Hon'ble Justice Mrs. Indu Prabha Singh is the first lady Justice of undivided Bihar, i.e. from the times when Jharkhand High Court was still a Bench of Patna High Court.
