He was approx. 26 years old, and a Private in the 1st Bn., 13th Regiment (later The Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Albert's), British Army during the Indian Mutiny when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC. Terry is researching Patrick J. Carlin and his wife, Letitia McCaffrey Carlin, who emigrated to the U.S. circa 1847 and ultimately settled in Iowa shortly after Iowa became America's 29th state, and their descendants.
They subsequently moved to Illinois, where Patrick was a flsmith, and lived in Geneva, Batavia and Ottawa, where their son Philip was born in 1852.
The couple had six children, all born in the U.S. Patrick enlisted in 1861 as a private with the 16th Iowa Infantry during the Civil War, was wounded at Pittsburgh Landing and Shiloh, and contracted tuberculosis in the hospital.
