Comments on Mormonism In a written response to claims made in This Rock Magazine by Mormon apologist Robert Starling, Madrid observed that "[a]ccording to the 1991 World Almanac, the National Center for Health Statistics reports that the yearly national average for divorce is 4.7 per thousand population. Utah, which is predominantly Mormon, ranks at 4.6 per thousand, while three largely Catholic states, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, come in at 3.8, 3.2, and 2.9, respectively. Mormon marriages seem to fail more often than Catholic marriages."[1] However, Mormons married in a temple "have have the lowest divorce rate among all U.S. social and religious groups studied, " and that Utah has the highest percentage of married couple families.[2] Madrid also claims that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (i.e., Mormon Church) only uses its welfare resources to help their own and unlike Catholics who have many charitible endeavors asking "Where are their Mormon counterparts?".[1] However, the LDS Church claims to operate hundreds of similar projects. In fact LDS statistics show that "from 1985 to 2006 Humanitarian Services provided more than $900 million in total assistance to needy individuals in 163 countries," none aimed toward Mormons alone.[3] This is second only to the Catholic Church in world wide charitable causes, despite the LDS Church being a fraction of the size. Utah also ranks highest in charitable contributions.[2]
