Encyclopedia > Paul Albert Gordan

Paul Albert Gordan (April 27, 1837December 21, 1912) was a German mathematician.

He was known as "the king of invariant theory". His most famous result is that the ring of invariants of binary quadratic forms is finitely generated. He and Alfred Clebsch collaborated to introduce Clebsch-Gordan coefficients. Gordan also served as the thesis advisor for Emmy Noether.

He was born in Breslau, Germany (now Wroclaw Poland), and died in Erlangen, Germany.

Gordan biography (971 words)
Gordan did not undertake the bulk of this work at Giessen, however, for he moved to Erlangen in 1874 to become professor of mathematics at the university.
Gordan was recognised as the leading world expert on invariant theory and he was also a close friend of Klein's.
Gordan's only doctoral student was Emmy Noether, the daughter of Max Noether who was also at Erlangen during this period.
