Beginnings

When the character of Paul Cramer first appeared in late 2003, he turned up at the re-opening "Crossroads", the bar formerly owned by Ben Davidson, in search of Sarah Roberts, the daughter of Tina Clayton Lord and Cord Roberts. Paul said he had known Sarah's brother C.J. while serving as a pilot in the Navy and that he had made "the biggest mistake of his life". It is unknown just what that mistake actually was, as Paul never shared any scenes with Sarah and instead became embroiled in a storyline with Dorian Lord and the Cramer family. Dorian was shocked to discover that her sister Melinda had secretly had another child, and that this heretofore unknown Cramer could be the heir to Dorian's aging Aunt Betsy's fortune. Aunt Betsy, an eccentric old spinster, had very specific ideas on what a "real Cramer" was and felt that almost all the women in the family had abdicated their power and self-esteem to men. Each of the Cramers were desperate to get their hands on Aunt Betsy's inheritance, but the matriarchal family was shocked when man-hating Betsy's favor turned to the dark horse: Paul, the newcomer, who also happened to be a man. As played by Brock Cuchna, Paul Cramer seemed to be a fairly agreeable, well-to-do young man, targeted for ruin by Dorian and her partner in crime David Vickers. Dorian and David were determined to get Aunt Betsy's inheritance, and needed to get dirt on Paul in order to force him out of Betsy's good graces. They found what they needed when they discovered Paul's connection to schemer Babe Carey and Pine Valley, and Paul and Babe's outrageous marriage from the recent past. With Paul out of Betsy's favor, Dorian and David were free and clear to use the girl they knew as Adriana Colon to gain control of the Cramer wealth once and for all. Paul, meanwhile, began exhibiting shadier behavior, leading to the character being recast with David Tom and the beginning of the "baby switch" crossover with All My Children. Crossover to All My Children

The character of Paul first crossed over to All My Children on December 30, 2003, where he became the primary catalyst for the "baby switch storyline" of 2004. Paul offered to help transport ex-wife Babe and her friend Bianca Montgomery to safety via "medevac" helicopter during a violent storm. Both women had just given birth. Disaster struck, and the women believed Bianca's daughter had been lost. In truth, Paul switched the children, giving Bianca's daughter to an unwitting Babe, and giving Babe's natural son to his sister, Kelly, who had just secretly miscarried, to raise with her husband Kevin Buchanan. To the grieving Bianca, Paul left nothing. When Babe discovered the truth, she remained silent for months and allowed Paul to manipulate her and Bianca. Paul also relentlessly blackmailed Kelly, threatening to tell her husband and the rest of Llanview.
