This art history major dropped out of Columbia graduate school to pursue a career in editing trailors and montages. In the early 1970s he was introduced by his brother, Charles, to then unknown filmmaker Brian De Palma. Their collaboration yielded ten feature films:
Blow Out (1981) Carrie (1976) Fury, The (1978) Hi, Mom! (1970) Mission to Mars (2000) Mission: Impossible (1996) Obsession (1976) Phantom of the Paradise (1974) Raising Cain (1992) Sisters (1973)
In 1978, he along with Richard Chew and Marica Lucas won the academy award for achievement in film editing.
It is rumored that Hirsch and De Palma are no longer on speaking terms with each other. In 2001/2002 he was fired from "The adventure of Pluto Nash". But in 2003 he replaced the original editor on "Ray".
It is also rumored that he has been on and off been working on his memoirs for the past decade.
Hirsch is known for giving aspiring film editors guidance.
