Paula Schaeffer is a programmer for CTU during Season 2 of 24. As a new employee at the beginning of the season, Paula is nervous when she hears a nuclear bomb could go off in Los Angeles that day, and feels she is incapable of carrying out her job efficiently. When Jack is undercover with Eddie Grant, one of Joe Wald's men, another man named Dave grows suspicious. Dave checks Jack's record online, and Paula sees them making the trace from her computer. Tony and Michelle haven't yet downloaded Jack's information, so Paula quickly fills something in. When Eddie sees they are getting no results, he pulls out his gun, ready to shoot Jack. In the next hour, CTU receives an order to transfer all of their database information onto NSA servers. Eric Rayburn, the deputy head of NSA, knew of a bomb threat to CTU that would occur within the hour. Jack had earlier called Lynne Kresge to alert them to the bomb threat. Lynne shared this information with Rayburn. Rather than revealing the information and blowing Jack's cover with Eddie, Rayburn kept the intel a secret. Fearing the loss of CTU's information on the nuclear threat, he ordered Tony to copy the information to their servers. Tony sends Paula to work on sending the data over. When Michelle talks to Paula in the bathroom, Paula says she is worried about her family and friends who are living in the city, but she knows she must keep working. Michelle Dessler is a fictional character played by Reiko Aylesworth on the television series, 24. ...


Once Tony is informed of the bomb, he orders an immediate evacuation of CTU. He sees Paula working in Mason's office, and runs up to tell her to get out of the building. She is still trying to complete the transfer to NSA's server. He forcibly grabs her, and as they are walking down the stairs, the bomb goes off. Paula is knocked to the floor.


After the explosion, Paula is stuck under a girder, barely conscious. Paula had earlier encrypted all of their intelligence on the nuclear threat, but is now unable to decrypt it. George Mason tells Tony to do whatever he can to regain that data. George Mason is a fictional character in the Fox television series 24. ...


Rescue workers help to remove the girder off of Paula, but she is still unresponsive. She has internal bleeding and needs immediate surgery. As Tony and the workers rush her to an ambulance, Mason meets them. Mason tells the workers that he needs her to stay on site, and she needs to be awake. She is the only one at CTU who can decrypt the data. Tony argues with Mason because Paula will die if she is not taken to the hospital immediately. Against Tony's wishes, Mason orders the doctor to wake her up.


When Paula wakes up, Michelle and Mason ask her for the source decryption key to complete the file transfer. With her last words, Paula gives them the location of where she hid a copy of the decrypt her. Mason tells her that she is responsible for saving lives. As Paula is rushed to an ambulance, she flatlines. Paula died before ever leaving CTU.
