Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,062 km˛ (410 mi˛). 1,055 km˛ (408 mi˛) of it is land and 7 km˛ (3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.65% water.
Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 20,578 people, 7,371 households, and 5,572 families residing in the county. The population density is 20/km˛ (50/mi˛). There are 7,949 housing units at an average density of 8/km˛ (20/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 90.25% White, 0.87% Native American, 0.85% Asian, 0.10% Black or African American, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 5.57% from other races, and 2.33% from two or more races. 11.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 7,371 households out of which 37.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.00% are married couples living together, 9.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.40% are non-families. 20.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.78 and the average family size is 3.21.
