Paysandu is a Brazilian football club located in Belém, Pará. Paysandu is also known as Papão da Curuzu. Papão because they won several titles in the 1940s and Curuzu because this is the name of the street where Paysandu's stadium is located in.
Paysandu is the most successful club in Northern Brazil, having won 40 State Leagues, 1 Regional League (Copa Norte in 2002) and 3 national titles (Brazilian League Second Division in 1991 and 2001 and the Brazilian Champions' Cup in 2002).
Paysandu called the world's attention in 2003 when they had a brilliant campaign in Copa Libertadores de América, beating several traditional South American teams such as Cerro Porteño and Boca Juniors (at La Bombonera).

In 1991 Paysandu was the champion of the Campeonato Brasileiro Second Division.
In 2003, Paysandu was eliminated by Boca Juniors of Argentina on the second leg of a match for Copa Libertadores.
The club remained in football ostracism for over a decade, but were runners-up of the Campeonato Brasileiro in 2005, losing the title to Corinthians in the last round and after a controversial season that saw matches being cancelled because of a match-rigging scandal.
On August 3, 2006, the club clinched a berth in the final of the tournament by beating Paraguay's Libertad 2-0 after a 0-0 draw in the neighboring South American country last week.
This club should not be confused with SportClub Internacional of São Paulo, formed August 19, 1899, founder members of the Liga Paulista or the SportClub do Recife of Recife.
