Encyclopedia > Peabody Conservatory of Music

Located in Baltimore, Maryland, the Peabody Conservatory of Music (or just "The Peabody") is one of the most prestigious musical institutions in the world, and also the first conservatory in America.


Founded in 1857 by philanthropist George Peabody, the Conservatory was purchased by Johns Hopkins University in 1977 and has been under the direction of Hopkins ever since. The Peabody Conservatory is the larger part of the Peabody Institute, comprised of the Conservatory and the Peabody Preparatory.

The Institute's Peabody Conservatory is highly regarded in the world of music, often mentioned in the same breath as the prestigious Juilliard School in New York, and boasts a long line of distinguished students, including composer Leonard Bernstein, pianist Andre Watts and singer Tori Amos.
