In the broad sense a peace officer is any public sector person charged to uphold the peace. In modern times this refers primarily to police officers, constables, American sheriffs or marshals and their deputies, and their equivalents under various legal and cultural systems, but in olden times the category also included knights, other nobility, and certain judges of first instance (from which derives the term Justice of the Peace). The public sector is that part of economic and administrative life that deals with the delivery of goods and services by and for the government, whether national, regional or local/municipal. ... Modern legal codes use the term "peace officer" as an inclusionary term for every public sector person vested by the legislating state with law enforcement authority. Hence city police officers, county sheriff's deputies, and state troopers are usually vested with the same authority within a given jurisdiction.

A Regional Committee is actively working towards raising funds to build a Pikes Peak Region Peace Officers’ Memorial in Colorado Springs to honor peace officers who have died in the line of duty while serving the communities within the Pikes Peak Region.
Since 1896, 20 peace officers in El Paso and Teller Counties have made the ultimate sacrifice.
Once the Memorial has been constructed, an ongoing foundation will be established to assist out of town family members with transportation and lodging costs when attending the funeral of a fallen peace officer.
