Peaches' music is preoccupied with gender identity. Her lyrics and live shows self-consciously blur the distinction between male and female: she appears on the cover of her second album Fatherfucker with a full beard; when asked if she had chosen the title for shock value, she commented: | | Why do we call our mothers motherfuckers? Why do we stub our toe and say "Aww motherfucker!"? What is motherfucker? ...[W]e use it in our everyday language and it's such an insanely intense word. I'm not one to shy away from these obscene terms that we actually have in our mainstream. Motherfucker is a very mainstream word. But if we're going to use motherfucker, why don't we use fatherfucker? I'm just trying to be even. | | | She refutes accusations of 'penis envy', preferring the term 'hermaphrodite envy', since "there is so much male and female in us all". Nevertheless, she does not shy away from identifying herself as a sexual being, although she rejects the sanitised portrayal of women in popular music. Image File history File links Cquote1. ...

On Air America Radio's Majority Report, co-hosts Sam Seder and Janeane Garofalo have a trademark signoff - when one of them ends the show with the phrase "Peaches". This is in reference to a lengthy interview with Peaches on the show's May 6 2004 episode. Peaches seemed arguably out of place within the show's highly political tone and fast paced intellectual discourse. Her slower, less articulate speaking pace and mumbled ramblings about backstage sexual experiences were not well received by the show's audience with many of them feeling that there were better interview subjects out there that would be more suited to the show and more relevant to the political climate of the time. Before the episode was finished and as it was a taped interview, Sam and Janeane stopped the interview half way through, due to strong complaints of the interview from bloggers on the Air America Radio website. Garofalo, a fan of Peaches as a performer, later felt bad for cutting Peaches off mid-interview, so she decided to say her name at the conclusion of each episode in an attempt to make it up to her.
