Peasants and Workers Party of India, a marxistpolitical party in Maharashtra, India. The influence of the party is limited to three districts. The party is based amongst the Maratha caste.
The party has roots from the pre-Independence period.
Today the party has distanced itself from its ideological origins. Many within the Indian left do not recognize PWPI as a left-wing party, but as a party representing bourgeoisie interests. The party is accused of having cooperated with the right-wing extremist Shiv Sena.
Within PWPI there is a clear division between the old leadership and younger politicians. In general the younger generation is considered as less ideologically inclined.
The name of PWPI in Marathi is भारतीय शेतकरी कामगार पक्ष (Bharatiya Shetkari Kamgar Paksha), abbreviated SheKaPa.
The students organization of the party is called Vidhyarthi Purogami Sabha (Progressive Students Union).
Parties are listed in the following order; First listed are parties registered as National parties, secondly parties registered as State parties and then unrecognized parties that won seats.
Unrecognized parties that failed to win any seats are not listed.
