The word Pecatonica means "crooked river."


It rises in the hills of southwest Wisconsin, in southwest Iowa County, 2 mi (3.2 km) west of Cobb. It flows south, then southeast, past Calamine and Darlington. In southeast Lafayette County it receives the East Branch Pecatonica River, approximately 8 mi (13 km) north of the state line. It flows SSE into Illinois, past Freeport, where it turns east, then ENE, receiving the Sugar River in northern Winnebago County, 5 miles (8 km) south of the state line. Pecatonica River - WI (575 words)
The Pec is a narrow often tree canopied river that gives a remote feel even when not far from county roads.
The river banks were for the most part tree lined and grassy, though a couple times we did pass small rock formations.
The river bottom is mainly mud and after recent rains the areas along the banks get a bit muddy as well, but if you are looking for tranquility you can't beat this little gem.
