Pemba is part of the semi-autonomous archipelago of Zanzibar within Tanzania, and is divided into two regions.
Physical Tanzania is bounded by Kenya and Uganda on the north, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo on the west, and Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique on the south.
It borders on the Indian Ocean in the east; on South Africa and Swaziland in the south; on Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi in the west; and on Tanzania in the north.

Mkoani - is the main sea port of Pemba and the administrative centre of the district.
The sea port at Wete was once a very important gateway to the island of Pemba but poor maintenance of the jetty and the upgrading of Mkoani warf has dropped down the use of her sea port.
