Encyclopedia > Pemberton, British Columbia

Pemberton is a town north of Whistler in the Pemberton Valley and has a population of about 2,204. Up until 1975 the town could only be accessed by train but that changed when a highway was built through Whistler and subsquently through Pemberton shortly after. The climate of Pemberton is very warm and dry in the summer time and mild and wet in the winter time. The regulated temperatures are created by the surrounding Rocky Mountains. Pemberton was named for Joseph Despard Pemberton, a surveyor-general for the Hudson's Bay Company in the 1850s. Joseph Pemberton had laid out Victoria's town site, and supervised the building of British Columbia's first legislative building. The town's look is slighty rustic and has the apperance of the set of an Old West movie. Pemberton also has a small airport, with a runway long enough to handle commuter-sized planes and private jets.
