The PennsylvaniaDepartment of Education is the executive department of the state charged with K-12 and adult educational budgeting, management and guidelines.
It is under the command of Pennsylvania's Secretary of Education, formerly Francis V. Barnes, currently Gerald L. Zahorchak.
In 1969, the name of the Department of Public Instruction was changed to the Department of Education, with the title of Superintendent of Public Instruction changed to the Secretary of Education.

Curriculum regulations promuglated by the Pennsylvania State Board of Education are administed by PDE. Academic Standards and Assessment (Chapter 4) are the framework for districts to develop curriculum, instruction and assessment at the local level.
