Pentium Extreme Edition is the brand name given to a series of Intel microprocessors introduced during the 2nd Quarter 2005 Intel Developers Forum, not to be confused with the "Pentium 4 Extreme Edition" (an earlier, single-core processor occupying the same niche). The processor is based on the dual core Pentium D (featuring Smithfield core, but it has Hyperthreading enabled, thus any operating system will see 4 logical processors (2 x 2 physical cores). The processor also supports EM64T and the NX bit. It also has an unlocked multiplier to allow for overclocking. Early performance reports state that the processor is stable up to 3.8 GHz with air cooling. The Pentium Extreme Edition was released as Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 840, in early 2005, at a price point of $999.99 (OEM) or $1,200 (Retail). Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) (founded 1968) is a U.S.-based multinational corporation that is best known for designing and manufacturing microprocessors and specialized integrated circuits. ...

The only chipsets that will work with the Extreme Edition are Intel's 955X and NVIDIA's nForce4 SLI Intel Edition. Attempting to use an Extreme Edition with an Intel 945-series chipset will disable Hyperthreading, effectively turning the processor into a Pentium D. An nForce4 motherboard with SLI support; note the presence of two rather than one video card slots The title of this article is incorrect due to technical limitations. ...
Presler The next Pentium Extreme Edition processor will feature the Presler 65 nm core. This processor will be manufactured by putting two Cedar Mill cores (2 dies) in a single package, unlike Smithfield, which is two Prescott cores put together in a single die. Just like Smithfield Extreme Edition, Presler will have HyperThreading enabled. But Presler, will also have a 1066 MHz FSB unlike Pentium D (both Smithfield and Presler cores) and Pentium Extreme Edition 'Smithfield'. It will be introduced in 2006 as Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 955, at 3.46 GHz. Just like Smithfield EE, Prelser EE will have EM64T, NX bit but also VT (Virtualization Technology) and also 4 MB of L2 cache (2 MB per core). Rumors say that this processor will only run combined with Intel 'Broadwater' chipset, which will be released as Intel 975X. i975X will feature ICH8 southbridge and will accept all Pentium 4, Pentium D and Pentium Extreme Edition processors. It is also said that this chipset will also work combined with Conroe the next generation CPU of Intel.
