Percy Erskine Nobbs (1875-1964) was a Canadian architect who was born in Haddington, Scotland and trained in the United Kingdom, but spent most of his career in the Montreal area. He was responsible, alone or within a practice, for constructing a great many of what would eventually become Montreal's heritage buildings. Nobbs had already received awards and won prizes as a practicing architect when he came to McGill University in 1903 to teach architecture. He got the permission to practice architecture while teaching, and soon obtained commissions for private homes as well as for institutional buildings. His designs for homes had the distinction of paying a great deal of attention to the siting and orientation of the building, and the placement of the windows. He considered this at least as important as what the home actually looked like. He called it "building for Prospect as well as Aspect," and designed many an impressive mansion in this way. Nobbs, Percy Erskine, architect (b at Haddington, Scot 11 Aug 1875; d at Montréal 5 Nov 1964).
Elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1900, Nobbs soon won 2 of the Institute's prestigious prizes: the Tite Prize (1901) and the Owen Jones Studentship (1902).
A man of many interests and talents, Nobbs was active in the early Canadian planning movement, wrote extensively, won a silver medal for fencing in the 1908 Olympic Games, and in 1948 founded the Atlantic Salmon Association to ensure the species' survival.

When Nobbs arrived at McGill, he found that the Department of Architecture consisted of Henry F. Armstrong (the only full-time appointed teacher at the School) and two students, Gordon H. Blackader and Harold E. Shorey.
This conflict led to Nobbs' request, in 1909, to be relieved of the responsibility of the directorship.
Nobbs, however, remained on the staff of the School as a Professor of Design until his retirement.
