History

Perfect 10 was created by Dr. Norman Zada, a former Stanford University professor, in 1996.

During 1998, Perfect 10 began promoting a Perfect 10 Model Search contest which Ashley Degenford won and Marisa Miller was the runner-up. Ms. Miller later became a Victoria's Secret and Sports Illustrated magazine model.

Perfect 10 v. Google, Inc.

In August 2005, Perfect 10 asked the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles to stop Google from caching and displaying thumbnails to third party sites which offer unlicensed images from Perfect 10, because this interferes with their cell-phone thumbnail offer. In February 2006 the court granted the request in part and denied it in part, ruling that the thumbnails were infringing but links sites with images were not. The case is among the first to be decided on issues of search engines. Perfect 10 v. ... This article is about the search engine. ...

EFF: Perfect 10 v. Google (504 words)
In this case, adult entertainment publisher Perfect 10 claims that Google violates its copyrights by indexing Perfect 10 photos posted on unauthorized websites as well as making and delivering thumbnail images of those photos.
Perfect 10 argues that because Google "created the audience" for sites it indexes, it should be on the hook for whatever infringements occur on those sites.
Moreover, Perfect 10 is arguing that every time you visit a web page with an infringing image on it, you are an infringer, and Google should be held responsible for pointing you there.
Technology & Marketing Law Blog: More on Perfect 10 v. Google (646 words)
Perfect 10 alleges that Google (and, in a separate suit, Amazon.com) has directly, vicariously and contributorily infringed Perfect 10's copyrights in 1000's of pictures of models that third parties illegally downloaded and posted to the Internet.
Perfect 10 went after Google because one can easily find these images if one types in the name of a model in Google's "image search," and, presumably, because going after Google is easier than chasing thousands of individual infringers around the world.
This decision is on Perfect 10's motion for a preliminary injunction, and is decided on the "likelihood of success" standard, so there is a possibility that the analysis may change as the case proceeds in this court or on appeal.
