Encyclopedia > Pericycle

Found in the stele of plants, the pericycle is a cylinder of parenchyma cells that lies just inside the endodermis. It conducts water and nutrients inward to the vascular tissue. In dicots, it is also has the capacity to produce lateral roots. Branch roots arise from this primary meristem tissue. In a vascular plant, the stele is the central part of the root or stem containing the vascular tissue and occasionally a pith. ... Endodermis is the bottom layer of skin. ... Vascular is an adjective for the word vessel and refers to tube-like structures. ... Orders see text Dicotyledons or dicots are flowering plants whose seed contains two embryonic leaves or cotyledons. ... Lateral roots extend horizontally from the primary root and serve to anchor the plant securely into the soil. ...

A plant tissue characteristic of the roots, located between the endodermis and phloem.

One such internal tissue is the pericycle, the exterior cell layer of the provascular cylinder which is surrounded by ground meristem (cortex + endodermis) and epidermis.
This study demonstrated that extensive de-differentiation of the pericycle cells is apparently not required for the formation of LRPs.
The first is defined when pericycle cells exit the meristem after establishment of LRP founder cells, generally in the acropetal pattern.
Roots (641 words)
Pericycle - the outer boundary of the stele.
The final step from the cytoplasm of the pericycle cells to the xylem is probably accomplished once again by active transport.
The older parts of roots are sheathed in layers of dead cork cells impregnated with a waxy, waterproof (and airproof) substance called suberin.
