It is sometimes stated that this exists only in solution, but this seems to be incorrect.

If you get too much permanganate, the manganese oxide separates as oily droplets, and they are of the same order of sensitivity to shock as nitroglycerine.

And potent oxidizers, which I knew (that was the whole point of the mixture) and in the case of Mn2O7, explosive, which I wish I had known at the time.
