Perth is a town located in Fulton County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,638. The town is named after Perth, Scotland.


The Town of Perth is in the eastern part of the county.


Geography

Part of the town is in the Adirondack State Park at the south end of Great Sacandaga Lake.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 67.5 km˛ (26.1 mi˛). 67.5 km˛ (26.1 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.08% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,638 people, 1,318 households, and 951 families residing in the town. The population density is 53.9/km˛ (139.6/mi˛). There are 1,416 housing units at an average density of 21.0/km˛ (54.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 91.51% White, 6.40% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.58% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 3.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,318 households out of which 30.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% are married couples living together, 9.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.8% are non-families. 23.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.90.


In the town the population is spread out with 31.0% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 107.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.6 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $39,932, and the median income for a family is $46,181. Males have a median income of $30,032 versus $23,750 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,870. 6.1% of the population and 5.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.0% of those under the age of 18 and 4.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
