The group found deforestation throughout the 1980s and 1990s has been less than originally thought, with previous estimates of 1.9 petagrams of carbon emitted as CO2 each year being too high.
A petagram is equivalent to 10^15 grams of carbon, or one gigatonne (billions of tonnes).
New estimates put the figure at 0.6 petagrams of carbon per year in the 1980s, and 0.9 petagrams per year in the 1990s.
