Petalburg City in the animé - In the animé May's family live in Petalburg City, including her father Norman, who is the Gym Leader. When Ash first arrives, May runs off (in a similar fashion to Misty when Ash first arrived in Cerulean City!) At the Gym, he meets Max pretending to be the Gym Leader. Once everything is cleared up, Ash meets Norman and Caroline, and has a practice battle against Norman's Vigoroth, which he loses. Max then joins the group, and Ash and May receive their badge cases.
- After Ash gains four badges, the group reunite with Norman and Caroline on their Wedding anniversary. The next day, Ash has an official Gym Battle against Norman's Slakoth, Vigoroth and Slaking, and gains a Balance Badge.
