He began his musical career in 1922 as a drummer in Kansas City, Missouri. From 1926 to 1938 he worked as a pianist, often accompanying Big Joe Turner. In 1938 he and Turner appeared in the Spirituals to Swing concert at Carnegie Hall. Johnson was born in Ohio and raised in eastern Pennsylvania, was a Peace Corps Volunteer in India from 1967-69 in a family planning program - where his son was born.
Pete helped start the Northern California PCA in the early '90s and is still involved with them.
He was on the NPCA board for 6 years after replacing his bride, Susan Neyer, after her 9 years on the board and now he is an honorary board member involved in assignments from the Chair and some areas not assigned or requested by anybody.
