Peter Charles Newman (born May 10, 1929 in Vienna, Austria) is a Canadian journalist who emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Canada in 1940 as a Jewish refugee. He was educated at Upper Canada College and the University of Toronto. He served as editor of Maclean's and the Toronto Star. In 1978 he was made an officer of the Order of Canada and was promoted to companion in 1990. Newman is widely respected for his intimate knowledge and understanding of Canadian business leaders. His 1975 book, The Canadian Establishment was widely acclaimed. Newman's sense of responsibility is highly debatable, and his newly released book is regarded as very controversial by Canadians. Many would argue that he deliberately exploited and betrayed Mulroney, who trusted Newman as a friend.
