Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he arrived in Sydney (at that time the principal city of the British colony of New South Wales) in 1855. Details of his earlier years, prior to his arrival in Australia, are shadowy. He spent most of his life employed by the NSW Education Department. He composed the tune for Advance Australia Fair in 1878 under the pseudonym of Amicus. It was first sung by Andrew Fairfax in Sydney on St Andrew's Day (November 30) that year at a Highland Society function. The song quickly gained popularity and an amended version was sung by a choir of 10,000 at the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. In 1907, the Australian Government awarded McCormick £100 for having composed it.

Peter Dodds McCormick, a prominent member of the Presbyterian Church and composer of "Advance, Australia Fair." The late Mr.
McCormick was official precentor of the General Presbyterian Assembly of New South Wales and of the Commonwealth assembly.
McCormick in 1896 was one of the principal workers in originating the mission work which was begun in a private house at Dover Heights, an outlying part of the Waverley parish.

Peter Dodds McCormick was born in Glasgow in 1834 or 1835 (date uncertain) and came to Australia in 1855.
McCormick's main interests were choral music, Scottish heritage and the Presbyterian Church, and he retired from teaching in 1885 to concentrate on these interests.
McCormick died nine years later in 1916 and was buried in Rookwood Cemetery, where his grave can still be visited today.
