Peter Englund (born April 4th 1957) is a Swedish author and historian, and is also a member of the Swedish Academy.


Englund was born in Boden and studied caretaking for two years and then humanistic subjects for another two years in high school. He was then conscripted and made a 15 month service in the Swedish Army at the Norrbotten Regiment located in Boden. He was politically active in his youth and supported the FNL.


He started studying archeology at Uppsala University, but then changed subjects to history, and he also studied theoretic philosophy, but didn't take a bachelor's degree in any of the subjects. He quit studying and got a job at the Swedish Military Intelligence Service (MUST). He got became a Ph.D. in 1989, one year after his first book, Poltava, was published.


He has been rewarded with the Augustpriset (1993) and Selma Lagerlöfs litteraturpris (2002). He became a member of the Swedish Academy in 2002.


He writes non-fictional books and essays, mainly about history, and especially about the Rise of Sweden as a Great Power, but also about other historical events.
