Kolvenbach's childhood was spent in Druten, the Netherlands, near Nijmegen where he attended Canisius College for his secondary studies. At Canisius he concentrated on modern languages. He entered the novitiate at Mariendaal on September 7, 1948. After completing philosophy studies at Berchmans Institute in Nijmegen, he was assigned to Lebanon, where he completed his doctorate in Sacred Theology at Université de Saint-Joseph in Beirut. The next years of his life were spent in academia, specifically in linguistics. From the period of 1963 to 1976 he taught general and Oriental linguistics at The Hague, Paris, and Beirut. As was written in the previous sketch, any person of the last quarter of the 20th Century, and one familiar with the very recent history of the Jesuits, recognizes the name of Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, the 29th General of the Society.
However, Father Kolvenbach's optimism was a continual encouragement to the members of the Society, which he conveyed by letter and numerous conferences as he visited the various provinces.
Kolvenbach appoints about 15 superiors for them each year; then there are local rectors and superiors in each province.
