Encyclopedia > Peter J. Bowler

Peter J. Bowler is a historian of biology who has written extensively on the history of evolutionary thought and on the history of genetics. His 1984 book, Evolution: The History of an Idea is a standard textbook on the history of evolution, and was substantially revised in 2003. He is currently a professor in the history and philosophy of science at Queens University of Belfast, and is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Bowlers emphasis is on the non-darwinian components of the traditionally held 'Darwinian revolution'. He shows how natural selection, the mechanism of evolution, was not taken up as enthusiastically as evolution, the idea of organic change over time. His many books chart how the idea of 'progress' drove much evolutionary thought, allowing it usage in many different fields, not always compatible with the random response of species to their environment. Even Darwin grew less sure of the random influence of natural selection. Bowler gives us an important interpretation of the Darwinian revolution, one that needs to be considered by any historian of science attempting to delve into the massive output of the 'Darwin industry' The history of science and technology (HST) is a field of history which examines how humanitys understanding of science and technology has changed over the millennia. ...
