Peter Laviolette Jr. (born December 7, 1964 in Franklin, Massachusetts, USA) is an American former National Hockey League defenseman and current head coach. Since the 2003-04 NHL season, he has been head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes. He has also been the head coach of the New York Islanders and an assistant for the Boston Bruins. Laviolette, in his first year as coach, led the Islanders to the playoffs in 2002 after seven years of futility for the franchise. As a player, he played only twelve games in the NHL for the New York Rangers and spent the rest of his playing career among various minor league teams.
