Peterhead, like Fraserburgh, first grew as a fishing port, and became the largest white fish port in Europe [citation needed]. Although the industry is in decline, it is still important to the town. A new phase of growth was initiated in the 1970s with Peterhead becoming a major oil industry service centre, and the completion of the nearby St Fergus gas terminal. At this time, considerable land holdings were allocated for industrial development. In recent times, the town has suffered from several high profile company closures and is facing a number of pressures, including Common Fisheries Policy reforms and uncertainty over the future of Peterhead prison.

Peterhead is often referred to as The Blue Toon and people who were born there as Blue Tooners. More correctly they are called Bloomogganners, supposedly from the blue worsted stockings that the fishermen originally wore. The harbours, maritime and built heritage are the town's principal tourism assets. Recent initiatives include investments in the Peterhead Bay area, which have included the berthing of cruise ships in the harbour. A number of projects are planned under the auspices of the Peterhead Project initiative, including tourism strategy development, enhancement of existing attractions, measures to improve the town's physical attractiveness, and improved marketing and promotion. Robert (Bob) Simmers (Peterhead-citizen) has been one of the foremost persons in the town to have established the Peterhead-Aalesund-friendship. In Aalesund, Norway, Mr. Simmers is famous for this. At its peak in 1857, Peterhead's whaling fleet numbered 32 ships, but diminishing whale stocks and the introduction of shale oil to replace whale oil in lamps saw the fleet decline to 12 vessels by 1868, and the last whaling ship was put to other uses from 1892.
Peterhead itself can appear austere rather than pretty, especially if you catch it on a driech day with the predominant reddish granite seeming to absorb much of the available light.
And in front of the Town House is Peterhead's centrepiece, a statue of Field Marshal Keith presented to the town by King William I of Prussia in 1868.

Peterhead known locally as the "Blue Toon" is the most easterly mainland town in Scotland and with 18,500 inhabitants, the largest centre of population in Banff and Buchan area.
Peterhead lies near the mouth of the River Ugie and was originally called Peterugie, the name changing after the land was acquired by the Keiths, Earls Marischal of Scotland, in 1560.
Peterhead has always been intrinsically linked with fishing and it is perhaps appropriate that the oldest surviving building in the town is a 400 year old salmon fish house.
