For many years after its launch the 306 had dominated its class, but by 1997 the 306 was 4 years old and faced new rivals, most notably the Mk 4 Volkswagen Golf and Mk 2 Opel Astra/Mk 4 Vauxhall Astra, both of which were big-sellers. Also on the horizon was the Ford Escort's replacement. The new Ford was eagerly awaited, heightened by Ford's radical New Edge design theme first seen with Ka. Body styles At launch, the 307 was launched as a 3- and 5-door hatchback, though in 2002 the 307 range was expanded with the introduction of two estates, called the 307 Break and 307 SW. Externally they are almost identical, with the exception that the SW version has silver roof bars and a 3/4 length panoramic glass roof as standard equipment. Internally though, the 307 Break is a conventional estate, while the SW features an optional third row of removable seats so it is more flexible due to its MPV-like configuration. The SW exists because Peugeot did not develop a compact MPV spin-off as Citroën did with the Xsara Picasso, instead preferring to offer a more flexible version of its estate but maintaining the style and road manners of an estate. Critics General Criticisms Journalists had high hopes for the 307, especially as nearly all previous Peugeots in the 1980s and 1990s were best in class. Critics were expecting Peugeot to bring out a car to replace the dominant Ford Focus as the best car in the class, especially in the area of ride handling. This article or section is not written in the formal tone expected of an encyclopedia article. ...
Unfortunately for Peugeot this never happened, the now 3-year old Focus eclipsing the 307 in almost every area, particularly with the ride and handling, which was generally considered to be a step backward from the 306. The only area in which the Ford really lost out was the use of poorer quality materials used for the dashboard and some interior fittings, though the overall build quality of the Ford was superior. Several motoring surveys during the 2000s slated the 307 for sub-standard reliability and build quality such as Top Gear. Peach or Lemon uk based customer survey site lists the Peugeot 307 as one of the least reliable cars within its front page. The 2000s are the current decade, spanning from 2000 to 2009. ...

2005 model In 2005, the 307 was revised to meet the onslaught of rivals which had been launched since the 307s introduction in 2001. The front of the car was restyled featuring mildy revised lights, a new bonnet and the removal of the trademark Peugeot grille between the headlights. With the latter change, along with a new front bumper, the front of the car was now dominated by a larger air intake, as first established on the Peugeot 407, and which was now effectively the company's new 'grille'. Internally, the dashboard design remained the same but new, higher quality, materials were used throughout but this new-found quality is still short of that found in the Mk II Ford Focus, let alone the Mk V Volkswagen Golf or even the standard-setting Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series. Otherwise the car remained the same as before, even dynamically, which meant that not only was it some way short of the Mk I Ford Focus, it was now outclassed by the class-leading Mk II version which was now available. Peugeot and Citroën as marques scored 25th and 30th out of 30 overall for customer satisfaction, and that no PSA vehicle was listed in the top half of the customer satisfaction table.
307 in rallying The Peugeot 307 WRC, a World Rally Car based on the 307 CC, replaced the very successful 206 WRC in the World Rally Championship in 2004. The vehicle, nicknamed "The Flying Frog" and "The Whale", was plagued by transmission problems and only began to come into its element in competition towards the end of its factory-supported participation in the WRC. It has three WRC victories to its name, but saw its competition life cut short at the end of 2005 by PSA's self-enforced withdrawal from top-level rallying. It topped the podium in the series on the 2004 and 2005 Neste Rally Finland as well as in the 2005 Rally Japan. All the victories were at the hands of double world champion Marcus Grönholm. A private undertaking for the 2006 World Championship season by seasoned Peugeot preparatory firm Bozian Racing, dubbed OMV Peugeot Norway World Rally Team, has since largely assumed responsibility for the running of WRC-spec 307s. 307 CC Hybride HDi Peugeot has designed a diesel-electric 2-door-cabriolet hybrid version of the 307 that can achieve 80 miles per gallon. The vehicle is in the concept stages. In addition, a diesel-electric hybrid, unlike gas-electric vehicles, could be totally independent of oil since pure biodiesel can be used in any diesel engine.
