Sergeant Cerreta was an Italian-American Catholic who, unlike his predecessor Max Greevey, used charm and manners to investigate cases, rarely losing his temper in public. Little was known about Cerreta's personal life, except that he was married with five children, and served in the military before becoming a police officer. His family had a history in the textile and printing businesses ("The Working Stiff") and were loyal trade union members. Cerreta joined the 27th precinct after Greevey was gunned down in front of his house (episode "Confession"). Greevey's partner, Mike Logan, was originally very critical of Cerreta, who was originally brought in to lead the investigation into Greevey's murder and hence was seen by Logan as something of an interloper. However, as Logan continued to work with Cerreta and learned to cope with Greevey's death, the two developed a close working relationship. In 1992, Cerreta went undercover to broker a deal with a notorious gun dealer in order to break a Colombian drug ring that had ordered a murder ("Prince of Darkness"). However, during the course of the transaction, the hyperactive dealer panicked and shot Cerreta in the chest. Cerreta survived, but the bullet had damaged some nerves and weakened his legs. Believing that he could no longer function as a street cop ("Point of View"), Cerreta reluctantly told Logan that they could no longer work together. Ceretta accepted a desk job that the Chief of Detectives offered at the 110th precinct.
