Sir Philip Bowes de Vere Broke

Sir Philip Bowes de Vere Broke was a distinguished officer in the British Royal Navy. Broke was born in September 1776, and died in January 1841.

His most notable accomplishment was his victory of his vessel, the HMS Shannon, over the USS Chesapeake during the War of 1812. There had been half a dozen naval battles during the war when a Royal Naval vessel had fought an United States Navy vessel of equivalent rate. Up until the battle between the HMS Shannon and the USS Chesapeake the Americans had won all those battles. Shannon defeated Chesapeake on June 1st, 1813.

Broke was seriously wounded during this battle. He was created a Baronet in recognition. While his wounds precluded further active service Broke served as a naval gunnery specialist to the Royal Navy.

Unusually, young Broke received formal naval education -- most of his contemporaries received only "on the job" training.
